about

This is the only track in this album where I sing. This was also the first track of the second evening of recording, and I had gotten inspired, thanks to a Musical Acoustics college course, to play with string harmonics inside of a piano. What then transpired was the first musical sketch that ultimately inspired the song "On the other side" off my first Bandcamp album, "Fading Purple Sky." (In fact, I think I wrote the first sketches to "On the other side" the very next day!)

As for the singing, it wasn't until after I had been dinking around with the harmonics and then playing a slow riff that I realized I needed a set of lyrics in front of me (and didn't want to stop to write anything down). The only set of lyrics that I found I could use was text to a choral composition I had written just a couple years earlier. What was really cool was a rare -- still rare to this day -- opportunity to improvise-sing a melody while improvise-playing background music on the piano at the same time.

lyrics

Why are the nations in an uproar?
Why do the peoples mutter empty threats?
Why do the kings of the earth rise up in revolt,
And the princes plot together against the Lord and His anointed?

"Let us break their yoke," they say,
"Let us case of their bonds from us."
He whose throne is in heav'n is laughing.

The Lord has them in derision,
In derision,
In derision,
In derision.

Out of the depths have I called,
Out of the depths,
Out of the depths.

Out of the depths have I called to You, O Lord,
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Your ears consider well the voice off my supplication.

If You, Lord, were to note what is done amiss,
O Lord, who could stand?
Who could stand?
Who could stand?
O Lord, who could stand?

Out of the depths.
Out of the depths have I called to You, O Lord,
Lord, hear my voice.
Let Your ears consider well the voice off my supplication.
If You, Lord, were to note what is done amiss,
O Lord, who could stand?

For there is forgiveness with You.
Therefore You shall be feared.
O Israel, wait for the Lord.
For with Him there is mercy.

With Him there is redemption,
And He shall redeem Israel from all their sins,
From all their sins,
From all their sins.

(Psalm 2:1-4 and Psalm 130:1-3, 6-7; The Book of Common Prayer)
