Why are the nations in an uproar? Why do the peoples mutter empty threats? Why do the kings of the earth rise up in revolt, And the princes plot together against the Lord and His anointed? "Let us break their yoke," they say, "Let us case of their bonds from us." He whose throne is in heav'n is laughing. The Lord has them in derision, In derision, In derision, In derision. Out of the depths have I called, Out of the depths, Out of the depths. Out of the depths have I called to You, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears consider well the voice off my supplication. If You, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? Who could stand? Who could stand? O Lord, who could stand? Out of the depths. Out of the depths have I called to You, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice. Let Your ears consider well the voice off my supplication. If You, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? For there is forgiveness with You. Therefore You shall be feared. O Israel, wait for the Lord. For with Him there is mercy. With Him there is redemption, And He shall redeem Israel from all their sins, From all their sins, From all their sins. (Psalm 2:1-4 and Psalm 130:1-3, 6-7; The Book of Common Prayer)

about

The phrase “Science of Sonorous Mass” is an almost-anagram of the phrase “stream of consciousness,” which was what I originally wanted to title this album. I looked online to see if the title was taken for album use, and, lo and behold, it was, by the band “Vision Divine,” based in Italy. So that was out. But in anagramming that particular phrase, I stumbled upon another that, even to this day, has still not been used for an album title.

The title sounds mysterious, but it’s really not. It’s simply a cool way of saying: “here is what happens when I improvise brand-new music on the piano. This is what it sounds like.”

I recorded the tracks to this album, along with other tracks of other composed pieces, in the band room at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, over two evenings in late-January 2009 (January 29th and 30th, to be precise). The tracks that I am sharing in this album are all improvisations, some of which were inspired by other pieces I performed (which I also have recordings of). I was very grateful to have, as an alumnus, access to the band room, which, of all the large music halls that were available to me, had in my opinion the best-sounding piano of the bunch. And, it had a recording machine that I could simply pop in a blank CD and start recording.

Realizing that the tenth anniversary of the original recordings were fast approaching, I decided this would be as good a time as any to share these tracks. I hope you all enjoy.
