This was the first piece composed after having attended at least the first of the "Keyboard Conversations with Jeffrey Siegel" concerts, and my first exploration into 20th-century Neoclassical style. In addition to the above-mentioned concerts, I had also taken an "American Music" (appreciation) class as an elective, in which I studied George Gershwin (primarily his love songs), Aaron Copland, as well as various other Great American Songbook composers. I also found a form that seemed to work well enough that I used it in several other subsequent piano compositions, including Track 5: "Marshmallows in Milk." Although I treated this and all such subsequent compositions that used this form as fantasias, there are four distinct sections, all lasting roughly the same amount of time (although the second out of the four sections might be slightly longer than the others). Additionally, the third section in each case is played at a slower tempo than the rest.
One disclaimer: this is not a jazz piece.
This track was created as a music file in Finale which uses Garritan instruments. Piano samples used in this recording are from the Garritan Authorized Steinway Library.
