I wrote this song almost two years ago, in January/February 2009. True story: the night before this song was created I was recording piano solo tracks in the band room at St. Olaf College, and one of the tracks inspired the piano part for this song (hence the line "last night I played a song and recorded it"). It was also the only track for which I decided to sing along (hence the line "last night I wrote a song"). I've often found that letting my songs age offers wonderful perspective and direction when I get stuck trying to figure out how to finish writing it. In this case, I solicited advice from some close musical friends and rounded "On the other side" into the current product that you are listening to.
lyrics
Last night I wrote a song. It isn't much, but I hope you like it
I only wish I'd written it sooner
Last night I played a song and recorded it
It isn't much, but I don't care
I thought of you and wondered if we could go back to the time when we had a chance
(when I had a chance, anyway)
You're on your own and I'm on my own
And I'm still confused as to how that happened
It hurts less now than it did before
But I don't blame you, I only blame me
I thought of you and wondered if we could go back to the time when we had a chance
(when I had a chance, anyway)
It's funny on the other side seeing how it used to bug me
But it doesn't really now because I'm not young and foolish anymore
I thought of you and wondered if we could go back to the time when we had a chance
(when I had a chance, anyway)
