about

I composed this piece in January 2009 after coming home from an AmeriCorps meeting. One of the most prominent items on the agenda was watching a video of a filial therapist who explained her work (filial therapy is essentially play therapy for kids to work out their frustrations and emotions). What stuck out to me was this one kid who kept screaming and beating on the balloon over and over again. It was almost like watching a broken record. Nonetheless, it provided some interesting inspiration for this piece. Needless to say, though, I originally planned on making this a song and I thought of the first eight or so measures as an introduction. As I continued, I realized that the music was meant to continue in a more through-composed manner than to just repeat the same chords over and over again (it was already repetitive enough). I eventually turned it into a mini-sonata, which is what the piece is now.
