To hear weeping fall like music from a father's lips: "O Absalom my son!" To search to understand in vertigo, to run across a barren mind with a fading purple sky to your own river separating North from South; a divided kingdom. Sobs sounds across borders like the bellows of livestock that bleat longingly across a pasture. They lament their own who crossed over the boundary: those taken by kingship lust or crocodiles, those riding, captured, hung in trees, those devoured, put to pieces, leaving only red rivers behind. --lyrics by Bryan Runck

Last night I wrote a song. It isn't much, but I hope you like it I only wish I'd written it sooner Last night I played a song and recorded it It isn't much, but I don't care I thought of you and wondered if we could go back to the time when we had a chance (when I had a chance, anyway) You're on your own and I'm on my own And I'm still confused as to how that happened It hurts less now than it did before But I don't blame you, I only blame me I thought of you and wondered if we could go back to the time when we had a chance (when I had a chance, anyway) It's funny on the other side seeing how it used to bug me But it doesn't really now because I'm not young and foolish anymore I thought of you and wondered if we could go back to the time when we had a chance (when I had a chance, anyway) It's weird to be back here

I woke up sometime ago I don't remember where I was or what I did or if I did anything I look left I look right I look up and I look down I look forward and I see nothing I'm still here but everything else is not I'm wondering if I've reached the other side Did I die or did everyone else? 'Cause everything else is gone and vanished Everything around me is one color but which one I do not know is it white is it black is it gray? I don't see water I don't see land I don't see air I don't see space What did I do to lose everything? I'm still here but everything else is not I'm wondering if I've reached the other side Did I die or did everyone else? 'Cause everything else is gone and vanished Sometime last night something must've happened but my memory is all gone like a hard drive that's been erased by tech support Now I'm out here confused and lost I can't hear or see or smell but I guess it's what happens at the end of time I'm still here but everything else is not This must be the other side I mean, did I die or did everyone else? 'Cause everything else is gone and vanished

about

[Updated notes]
Fading Purple Sky is my introduction into the musical world. Like every musician, I have a story to tell (many stories, really), and my goal is to be as open and honest about it as I can, with safe boundaries in place. In this album I share via three genres: song-writing, piano composition, and piano improvisation. I believe that words do have a role to play in such story-telling, and I also believe that some of the best story-telling occurs without words.

A little bio: I learned to improvise on the piano at a very early age, and as a result learned to master the language of music-without-words at the same time as I mastered English. Growing up Classically-trained and in Anglican church choirs, I honed my composition skills via solo piano and with sacred-text choral music.

Ultimately, it was after studying music composition in college that I challenged myself to write my own lyrics and music together. Not surprisingly, I choose to write what I know, and a lot of what I knew is raw, open honesty about what I understood and understand life to be. Each year, this changes. Fading Purple Sky, released in November 2010, offers a snippet of how I understood truth in both words and music at that point in my life. Each succeeding album will offer a new perspective, a new knowledge, via music, with or without words.

I invite you to enjoy the journey with me.
